Katrina-level flood events are projected to become increasingly common across the Gulf region over the course of this century. In central New Orleans, the annual probability of such a flood will triple between 2025 and 2100, while along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the likelihood is expected to rise by a factor of 1.5 to 3. At the same time, flood damages will steadily escalate, even with stronger defenses in place. For the Mississippi Gulf, losses climb throughout the century, and while protections around New Orleans may initially reduce damages from smaller floods, a Katrina-scale event could overtop the levees as early as 2065—causing devastating consequences.
